Rick Bennett is still undefeated as a NCAA Division One head coach. His Union Dutchmen tied Niagara 3-3 on Friday and defeated RIT by a scoreline of 5-0 on Saturday. Forward Jeremy Welsh led the team with three points on the weekend ( two goal’s and one assist).
Bennett has had an optimal start to his tenure at Union. Leading the way for Bennett’s team in the goal scoring department so far this season is Welsh with five goals. Senior forward Kelly Zajac has also contributed with a team leading eight points ( 2g, 6a). As a team, Union’s offense ranks seventh in the country with a 4.20 Goals For Average. The teams power play unit’s might even be more impressive as they rank second in the country with a 34.78 conversion percentage.
Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick has done well to step into the starting role. He has led Union to a team Goals Against Average of 1.80, good for fifth in the country. With strong defense, the Dutchmen will continue to be successful, but will certainly be tested in the coming weeks as they will face much tougher opposition.
With that being said Bennett seems to have a great team under his command. With one more weekend to go before the start of the ECAC league play, Union must have confidence.
Union’s next game comes away against UNH on Friday. The game against the Wildcats will be the first test against a big name team for the Dutchmen this season, if they can get a result the rest of the season could be very interesting for Union.
