This past weekend was full on non-conference games for many ECAC teams, the results were mixed as the teams put up a record of 7-7-0.
One result clearly stood out as this year’s best result by an ECAC team against a non-conference opponent, as Union dispatched the University of Michigan 6-3 at Yost Arena in Michigan.
The Dutchmen were led by the outstanding play of Jeremy Walsh. The forward had two goals and one assist on the night. Walsh is starting to show that he is an outstanding prospect with the ability to score points on the big nights, as he also had a hat trick against Western Michigan earlier in the season.
Union goal Troy Grosenick continued his impressive season between the pipes as he stopped 33 out of 36 shots against the defending national runner-ups. The sophomore goaltender is easily one of the top goaltenders in the ECAC. If his performances continue there should be no reason that Union won’t make a serious run at the NCAA tournament this year.
With the result it is clear that Union is the best team in the league at the current time. As it stands the Dutchman are in the middle of the conference pack with a league record of just 3-2-0, but Union’s overall record sits at an impressive 7-3-3.
With all the slack that the ECAC gets, Union showed up this weekend and preformed against a very good Michigan team. They should be commended for that performance and hopefully my colleagues at College Hockey News will agree.
