Union Ready for Clash Against Rival RPI
Union head coach Rick Bennett is ready to start ECAC league play this weekend with a home and home against RPI.
The Dutchmen start league play after a mixed weekend against two Atlantic Hockey opponents in AIC and Uconn.
Friday night saw Union trounce a very under matched AIC 8-0 in a home coming of sorts for Massachusetts native Bennett. Senior forward Kyle Bodie was huge for the Dutchmen on the night racking up two goals and two assists on the night.
Union then traveled to Uconn on Saturday and battled a very resilient team for a 2-2 tie.
Ahead of the two match ups against RPI, Bennett talked about the battles his team will face,
“To get RPI back to back nice is always tough,” said Bennett. “ They gave us everything and more last year in the playoffs. Outside of Ferris State they gave us the toughest battle out of anybody. They are gonna be ready for us.”
The rivalry between Union and RPI has always led to some pretty entertaining games and expect this weekend to provide some of the same.
“ It is going to be a fun game. They always are,” said junior captain Mat Bodie. “ Even though last year they had a tough year result wise, they were a good team. They played us really tight and we learned a lot about ourselves every time we played them.
Ahead of ECAC play, the Dutchman have played five non-conference games. This will serve as some great preparation,
“ For us it is for getting our game under us before we play RPI twice,” said Bodie. “it will be good that we have had five games under our belt before we get to conference play.”
For the freshmen class it will be the first time they get a taste of the storied rivalry of the two New York teams. Bennett has been very pleased of what they have brought to the table this season,
“ These guys are very coach-able so when you show them stuff they seem to pick it up,” Bennett said of his freshman class. “ The group as a six is coming along nicely.”
