Big Ten: A Look Into Corsi, Week 13

Big Ten conference play created some interesting games, with overtime contests between Ohio State and Penn State as well as Minnesota and Michigan.

Penn State, known for good puck possession, continued that trend as it possessed the Buckeyes in a weekend split. Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s poor Corsi numbers continued as the Badgers tied and lost to Boston University.

Michigan vs. Minnesota 1/9/15, UM 4, Minn 3 OT

The score was close in this game until 7:48 minutes into the third, when Michigan went ahead 2-1. Minnesota responded with two goals in less than a minute – all on a five-minute major power play – to steal the lead, but Michigan tied it less than three minutes later. In the wild game, Minnesota had the slight 5-on-5 possession advantage with a 50.91 percent Corsi. The Gophers had a Corsi close of 55.32 percent.

This game might not have been as crazy as the overtime contest. After falling down 1-0 in the first, the Wolverines netted four tallies before the period was over. The two teams exchanged scores from that moment, but the Gophers were unable to close to gap. Minnesota’s 5-on-5 Corsi for the game was 53.21 percent.

Penn State vs. Ohio State, 1/9/15, PSU 4, OSU 5 OT

This was an interesting game. The Buckeyes had a 4-0 lead minutes into the third, but Penn State responded with four goals – and a Casey Bailey hat trick – to tie the game with 22 seconds left. Penn State dominated possession in the first period, recording a 73.91 percent Corsi in the frame (when both teams were scoreless). Penn State, which is known for puck possession, dominated with a 65.78 percent Corsi in 5-on-5 play. In the third, the Nittany Lions recorded a 61.09 percent rating, and topped it with a 73.33 percent Corsi in overtime. Ohio State didn’t take many shots in the extra frame, but won.

One night after a slow start, Penn State struck first on Saturday. The Buckeyes tied it in the second, but Penn State took a 3-1 lead midway through the frame. Penn State had the better Corsi close of 51.67 percent, while Ohio State’s was 48.33 percent.

Wisconsin vs. Boston University, 1/9/15, T, 3-3

This game was close until the third period, when the Badgers entered the frame with a one-goal lead. The Badgers led 3-1 late, but BU scored two goals in less than two minutes to tie the game. Wisconsin’s Corsi close (I counted the first two periods and overtime) was 35.54 percent. Wisconsin’s 5-on-5 Corsi for the game was 39.81 percent.

Wisconsin vs. Boston University, 1/10/15, L, 6-1

Wisconsin scored first, with Jedd Soleway netting one in the second. But the Terriers scored three goals by the end of the period, and entered the third with a 3-1 lead. Wisconsin’s Corsi close was 35.19 percent. In the third, Wisconsin’s Corsi picked up and that boosted the team’s overall 5-on-5 Corsi to 48.91 percent for the game.
