Posted by: Timothy O'DonnellWith another weekend done, there are two constants: Mercyhurst continues to roll and Sacred Heart is winless. RIT has also climbed back into the mix after a slow start and the return of Shane Madolora. Things are starting to take shape as the midpoint of the season inches closer.
Air Force – The Falcons had the weekend off as they prepare for a visit from UConn.
AIC – The Yellow Jackets played to a 3-3 tie with Army on Friday. Nine players recorded a point for the Yellow Jackets. Steve Mele scored his team leading fifth goal of the season. Nielson Arcibal recorded his first goal of the season after his 11 goal season last year.
Army – The Black Knights earned one point in the tie with AIC. The Black Knights then tied ECAC foe Brown 1-1 on Saturday. Andy Starczewski scored twice on the weekend to give him a team leading six on the season. He is the only Black Knight with more than two goals.
Bentley – The Falcons squared off with Mercyhurst in arguably the biggest matchup of the weekend. The two teams played a scoreless game on Friday before Mercyhurst escaped with a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Branden Komm continued his hot start to conference play. He has a 2.25 goals against average and a .936 save percentage this season. Steve Weinstein scored the Falcons lone goal on the weekend. Brett Gensler and Brett Switzer both had assists on the goal for their team leading 11 points.
Canisius – The Golden Griffins winless streak is now at five games following a loss and tie against Lake Superior State. Dan Morrison and Tony Capobianco continue to split starts in net,with Morrison taking the loss on Friday. Freshman Matthew Grazen scored his first career goal on Friday. Taylor Law scored twice and Kyle Gibbons also added two assists on the weekend for the Golden Griffins.
UConn – The Huskies crushed Sacred Heart 8-3 before hanging tough with Yale until eventually falling 5-3. Alex Gerke recorded a hat trick against Sacred Heart, his first goals of the season. Gerke also had two assists in the game. Jordan Sims scored twice and added an assist. He’s now on on three game point streak. The Huskies travel to Colorado to face Air Force this weekend.
Holy Cross – The Crusaders were swept in it’s two game series at RIT. The Crusaders were shut out on Friday before falling 6-5 in a wild game on Saturday. Holy Cross trailed 6-2 early in the third. They scored three straight goals to end the game but it wasn’t enough. The Crusaders had five different players score a goal on Saturday, including Mike Daly, who scored his first of the season.
Mercyhurst – The Lakers sit in first place after an undefeated weekend. The Lakers tied Bentley on Friday before defeating the Falcons on Saturday. Max Strang stopped 48 shots in a scoreless tie on Friday. On Saturday, the Lakers score two third period goals to escape with a 2-1 win. Both goals came on the power play.
Niagara – The Purple Eagles had the weekend off. The play at Cornell on Tuesday before traveling to Sacred Heart over the weekend.
Robert Morris – The Colonials had the weekend off. They host Army this weekend.
RIT – The Tigers are back. The Tigers swept Holy Cross at home. Shane Madolora had his second shut out of the season on Friday and then had plenty of offensive support on Saturday. Michael Colavecchia scored twice and had an assist in the two games. He is on a four game point streak.
Sacred Heart – The Pioneers are still winless. They played once this week and were blown out by UConn 8-3. Ryan Stanimir did pick up the first points of his career, assisting on two of the Pioneers’ goals. Chad Filteau and Ryan Miniaci also recorded their first points of the season, both recording an assist.
