Boston University outshot the Saints 17-8 in the first period and escaped the first period up 1-0, on a wicked wrister by Wade Megan at eleven minutes, 15 seconds that found the back of the net. The second period turned into the Matt Weninger show as he kept his Saints in the game by making 21 of 22 saves the Terriers sent his way in the period. BU would score two third period goals to put the game away and win it 4-0. The Terriers sent 47 shots at the St. Lawrence net and controlled the game from start to finish.

What I Saw

• Matt Weninger was the star of the show on this night despite giving up a goal apiece in the first two periods and two more in the third. The Terriers dominated the second period and until late in the period were unable to solve the Saints goaltender. For 19 minutes BU threw shot after shot at Weninger but he was able to come up big.   On the 22nd BU shot of the second period Weninger was finally solved and BU went up 2-0. His performance in the second was remarkable, and he was the only reason Saint Lawrence went into the dressing room with a chance in the third period.
• BU used their speed and skill in their favor for much of the game. They were able to wear down St.Lawrence by dominating the territorial play. After two periods, the Terriers had 39 shots and were on pace for 60 in the game. This game could be a huge confidence booster going forward for them, despite lacking a finishing touch in the first two periods.
• Sean Maguire wasn’t tested nearly as often as the SLU goaltender but he was still able to keep his team ahead by making 21 shots on the night and getting the his first career shutout. In doing so, he was able to keep two of the nation’s leading scorers off the board. Since a debut debacle at UNH, where he gave up four goals in 30 minutes of play, Maguire has gone 2-1-0 in his three starts and only losing against a really good North Dakota team.

What I Thought

• BU did a great job clogging up the neutral zone against two of the best players in the country, Kyle Flanagan and Greg Carey. Flanagan entered the night tied for the national lead in both goals (9) and points (21), while his teammate Greg Carey entered the night with 19 points. The only other time that these players were not part of the scoring threat was a 4-2 loss against Yale on November 10th. The fact that BU kept them off the scoreboard was the reason that BU was able to control the offense of the Saints with such prowess.
• St. Lawrence looked like a tired bunch for much of the second and third periods. Boston University did not play last night and the Saints did. It started off good on the first shift but it went down hill from that point on. The game was not in doubt after the Terriers scored their first goal, and from that point on it became a shooting gallery at Matt Weninger, as St.Lawrence got dominated on the puck and failed to win the necessary puck battles needed to compete on the night.

What They Said

St. Lawrence Coach Greg Carvel said,

“It was a little frustrating that we looked like a really tired team tonight. We thought we were set up well after last night. I thought the team played really well. Tonight we weren’t able to find the energy for more than five minutes of that game. it is frustrating we couldn’t find the energy to play in that game.”

“The late second period goal was a big one. I thought finally we in the last five minutes we had created some offense. Every goal at the end of a period, takes a little wind out of your sails. Weninger kept us in the game for a long time tonight. He made some outstanding saves.”

St. Lawrence Forward, Kyle Flanagan said,

“Hats off to BU. The shots, the score was exactly the way the game went tonight. They were the better team from start to finish. They played the same way from the drop of the puck to the final whistle. We didn’t match them for maybe 15 minutes tonight and that’s why the result was what it was.”

BU forward Matt Nieto said,

“It was important that a bunch of the guys were able to see St. Lawrence play last night. We are able to not take them lightly and get the win.”

BU Forward Wade Megan said,

“We have some work to do on our power-play. It hasn’t come along for us yet but we have enough skill on this team. We know it will eventually come to us and it will start clicking for us. When that happens we will be that much more dangerous.”

What Else You Should Know

If you didn’t know already, BU will play a home and home series with BC next weekend. The Battle of Comm Ave will take center stage, as it usually does. BC won going away against Dartmouth on Saturday night and the Terriers have lost two of their last three conference games, They are in desperate need of points in conference play as they look to keep up with both BC and UNH in the league standings.

St. Lawrence will play two road games next weekend as they will travel to both Colgate and Cornell. SLU is winless in the ECAC so far on the season and will be looking for wins as they split the weekend trip to Boston, picking up a win against Northeastern on Friday night. The Saints sit in tenth place in the league standings and are in dire need of coming up big in the next few weeks to stay in the ECAC race.
