One week ago today, the Boston College Eagles lost to Quinnipiac in the Frozen Four, with Michael Garteig turning aside a pair of Ian McCoshen shots inside of the final 75 seconds.

Since, there’s been a mass exodus.

Teddy Doherty and Travis Jeke are the only series losses for BC due to graduation. Brendan Silk graduates as well, but he only appeared in one game and Peter McMullen dressed in 15 games, but didn’t record a point and only had one shot on goal.

It’s all the early signings that have haunted BC.

Miles Wood, Alex Tuch, Adam Gilmour and Steve Santini have all moved on to NHL contracts. Thatcher Demko, according to Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning, is talking to his family before making a decision. Another drafted junior, Ryan Fitzgerald, is a candidate to sign as is drafted-junior Ian McCoshen. Then there’s Colin White, and while I think he’ll return, he is still a first-round pick and could potentially sign every offseason between now and when he actually does. Chris Calnan is a drafted junior who I believe will be back for his senior year, but you just never know if Chicago is going to be worried about losing him to free agency, especially after they lost Kevin Hayes just two years ago.

Austin Cangelosi is undrafted, but he did score 20 goals. My guess is that he would have signed by now if he was planning on it, but he’s another to keep an eye on. Zach Sanford should be back as well, but he did almost score 40 points as a sophomore and has ideal pro size.

So trying times for the Eagles, at least to an extent. Let’s remember that BC has 20 committed players in the pipeline, with 10 having potential to arrive next season, if not a few more. Of those players, five played with the U.S. National Team Development Program this past season. That’s widely regarded as the best program in the world when it comes to prepping college hockey players.

If Demko leaves, Joseph Woll will step in from the NTDP.  Other NTDP members include forwards Zach Walker, Graham McPhee and Logan Hutsko — he’s playing for the U17 team — as well as defenseman Michael Campoli.

These are just the next names you’ll hear about over on Chestnut Hill. If more exit could the Eagles take a step back? Sure. But it’s all relative. Will BC suddenly tailspin to the bottom of Hockey East? … Of course not.
