Atlantic Hockey Power Rankings

1. Mercyhurst – The Lakers have taken point in five of their last six conference games and continue to hold onto first place in the standings. A showdown with second place RIT awaits them this weekend.

2. RIT – The Tigers host first place Mercyhurst with a chance to jump into first themselves. A four game winning streak as the Tigers riding high.

3. Air Force – The Falcons won for the first time since Dec. 30 and won their first Atlantic Hockey game since Dec. 3. The Falcons finish their four game road trip with a visit to Canisius.

4. Robert Morris – The Colonials have taken points in 13 of their last 14 Atlantic Hockey games and have risen to third in the standings. The Colonials have a home-and-home series with Niagara this weekend. (more…)

Atlantic Hockey Wrap

Another weekend is done and things are getting more tighter in the standings. Five teams are within four points of first place and nine teams are within seven points. Every game is becoming crucial as we start to wind down the season.

Air Force – The Falcons won for the first time in six games against Army. The Falcons took three points from Army and now sit in fourth place. Jason Fabian, Paul Weisgarber, and John Kruse all scored twice on the weekend. Cole Gunner assisted twice to bring his Atlantic Hockey leading total to 18. Jason Torf picked up his first win of the season, stopping 16 shots. Since returning from injury, Torf has split starts with Stephen Caple.

AIC – The Yellow Jackets were outscored 10-2 while being swept by Niagara. Michael Penny and Steve Mele both had a goal and assist. Chandler Long started his second game of the season and surrendered six goals. (more…)

Atlantic Hockey Power Rankings

1. Mercyhurst – The Lakers have lost just once in the last six games and have jumped over Air Force for the top spot in Atlantic Hockey. They continue their six game road trip at Holy Cross this weekend.

2. RIT – The Tigers started the 2012 off by beating ranked teams in back-to-back games. After losses at Wisconsin, the Tigers had back-to-back shutouts of Sacred Heart, scoring 13 times. The Tigers face off against surging Bentley this weekend.

3. Air Force – The Falcons haven’t won since the start of the New Year and have just two ties to their name. The Falcons even suffered their first home loss of the season to Bentley. They’ll look to turn things around against Army. (more…)

Atlantic Hockey Wrap

What a weekend it was in Atlantic Hockey. The standings keep getting tighter and tighter, with eight teams within five points of first. You can even expand that to nine teams with a shot at at the top, if you include Canisius just eight points out.

Air Force – The Falcons have struggled since the start of the New Year. They are winless in four games and culminated with the Falcons first home loss of the season to Bentley on Saturday. Jason Torf received his first start since Oct. 8 and played well, surrendering just two goals. But the Falcons couldn’t muster any offense. Brad McBride recorded his first career assist on one of the Falcons three goals. Kyle De Laurell scored his conference leading 14th goal of the year while Cole Gunner added his 16th assist to also lead the conference.

AIC – The Yellow Jackets returned from a month off and went 1-2 in their three games. Their lone win, though, came against Atlantic Hockey leaders Mercyhurst. Adam Pleskach had three goals and an assist in the three games to extend his point streak to eight games. Nielsson Arcibal goes one better than Pleskach, extending his point streak to nine games with a goal and four assists. Blake Peake had the best week of his AIC career. The sophomore had a goal and four assists in the three games. He had just three points on the season entering the week. (more…)

Atlantic Hockey Wrap

Air Force – For the first time in awhile, the Falcons are not sitting atop the standings. A winless weekend agaisnt visiting Holy Cross saw the Falcons fall two points behind Meryhurst. Stephen Caple received both starts in net even with Jason Torf healthy again. Kyle De Laurell continues to roll as he scored three times against the Crusaders. Two of those goals came on Friday, his fourth multigoal game of the year.

AIC  -The Yellow Jackets were off but return to the ice on Tuesday when they travel to RPI.

Army – The Black Knights were swept at home by Canisius. The Black Knihgts scored just three goals on the weekend. Andy Starczewski scored twice for the Black Knights. His eight goals this season ties his career high and leads the Black Knights. He also has a point in three straight games. Danny Colvin added two assists to tie him for the team lead with seven. Atlantic Hockey Wrap: Holiday Tournament Edition

Air Force – The weekend marked the return of Jason Torf to the Falcons’ net. But it wasn’t the way the Falcons or Tord wanted to return. Torf came on in relief of Stephen Caple in the Falcons’ 7-1 loss to Denver on Saturday. After recording an assist against Colorado College on Friday, John Kruse’s five game point streak was ended against Denver. Kruse had three goals and five assists during that streak.

AIC – The Yellow Jackets are off until Jan. 10 when they face RPI.

Army – The Black Knights took part in the UConn Hockey Classic, where they finished third. Mike Hull had a goal and assist for the Black Knights. The Black Knights were shut out but UConn but then rebounded with a come from behind win against RPI in the consolation game. (more…)

Atlantic Hockey Midseason Review

We’ve reached the unofficial halfway mark of the season. It’d been a fun and exciting first half of the season. Outside of conference play, the league as a whole as struggled. All 12 teams combined to go 11-46-7 in nonconference games. But there was one huge win and that belongs to Sacred Heart. Possibly the upset of the year, the winless Pioneers shocked Yale with a 7-6 win.

But once conference play started, the league changed and teams began to assert themselves. Traditional powers Air Force and RIT continued their run of success, the Falcons are in first in the standings while RIT sits in a three way tie for third with Mercyhurst and Robert Morris. (more…)

RMU topples RIT

There was only a Atlantic Hockey game this week, but it was a huge game. RIT and Robert Morris faced off with a lot on the line.  A win for the Tigers would have moved them to first in the standings, while a Colonial win would tie them for second with RIT and Mercyhurst. (more…)

Atlantic Hockey Power Rankings

Well, we’ve reached the halfway point of the season as teams get some time off for finals and winter break. It’ll be a couple weeks before we get a full slate of conference games again. We’ll see you in 2012 for the next Power Rankings. Here are this week’s rankings.

1. Air Force – The Falcons didn’t play this past weekend but have done enough this season to remain in first in the standings and No. 1 in the Power Rankings. Stephen Caple continues to play well in net and continues to get offensive support. Kyle De Laurell and Cole Gunner are proving to be a dynamic duo as the top two scorers in Atlantic Hockey.

Air Force – The Falcons didn’t play this weekend. They return to the ice on Dec. 30 when they travel to Colorado College.

AIC – The Yellow Jackets were swept at RIT. Nielsson Arcibal had a goal and two assists while Adam Pleskach and Nathan Sliwinksi had a goal and assist each.

Army – The Black Knights fell to Holy Cross in their only game of the weekend.  Mac Lalor’s third goal of the season accounted for the Black Knights only tally. (more…)
