Penn State vs. UMass Lowell, 11/14/14 L, 5-3

The first period was almost all Corsi close, since the River Hawks went up 2-0 just before the period ended. Over that span, Penn State’s Corsi close was 50 percent. In the second, Penn State scored quickly into the second, but the River Hawks scored just over a minute later to go back up by two goals. The score wasn’t close for the rest of the game, as UMass Lowell eventually accrued a 5-1 lead. Penn State’s 5-on-5 Corsi for the game was 51.69 percent.

Penn State vs. UMass Lowell, 11/15/14 W, 4-1

This game wasn’t close for long, as the Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead 8:30 into the first period. By the end of the frame, Penn State was up 3-0. It’s a small sample size, but Penn State’s Corsi close for the game was 33.33 percent. The entire first period was spent on even-strength play, and Penn State’s Corsi for the period was 48.57 percent. Penn State’s 5-on-5 Corsi for the game was 41.46 percent.

Ohio State vs. Bowling Green, 11/14/14 W, 3-2

Almost the entire game can be counted as Corsi close, as neither team held more than a one-goal lead. The Falcons scored first, and Ohio State responded wtih two tallies late in the third to go ahead 2-1. The Falcons tied it with 1:16 left in the game, and Ohio State responded with a goal from Anthony Greco with 34 seconds left to win it. In the first, Ohio State’s 5-on-5 Corsi was 45.45 percent. In the second, when neither team scored, it was 39.39 percent for 5-on-5 play. In the third, when Ohio State scored all three of its goals, the Buckeyes had a 5-on-5 Corsi of 60.53. Over the span that the four goals — OSU’s three and BGSU’s one — were scored, the Buckeyes had a 5-on-5 Corsi of 66.67 (but it’s a very small sample size). Ohio State vs. Bowling Green, 11/15/14 L, 3-2

While this game had the same score as Friday, the scoring sequenced out differently. Bowling Green struck first for the second night in a row, and the two teams exchanged goals until the Falcons took the lead for good with less than four minutes left in regulation. I counted the Corsi close for this game as the first two periods — when Bowling Green led by one goal. The Buckeyes didn’t tie it until late in the third, and the Falcons retook the lead less than a minute later. Ohio State’s Coris close was 53.19 percent. For the game, the Buckeyes recorded a 5-on-5 Corsi of 48.28 percent.

Minnesota vs. Minnesota-Duluth, 11/14/14 L, 3-0

This was a little bit of a shocking loss for the Gophers, who were on a 17-game winning streak in Mariucci. The first period wasn’t kind for the team possession, although that seems to be a pattern with Minnesota. The Gophers recorded a 39.13 percent Corsi in 5-on-5 play for the frame. The game was close until UMD went up 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the second, and Minnesota’s Corsi close for the game was 40.54 percent. The Gophers finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 38.89 percent for the game.

Minnesota at Minnesota-Duluth, 11/15/14 L, 2-1

The Gophers managed to make it 2-1 at the end of the third, and the third-period rush was too little too late for Minnesota. The Bulldogs netted their first very early on in the game, and went ahead 2-0 before the end of the first. In the first, Minnesota’s Corsi close was 51.17 percent. The Gophers finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 55 percent for the game.

Michigan vs. AIC, 11/14/14 W, 5-2

The game was close until Michigan accrued a two-goal lead just over 10 minutes into the second period to go up 3-1. Over that period, the Wolverines dominated 5-on-5 possession with a 75 percent Corsi. In the first two periods, Michigan recorded a 5-on-5 Corsi of over 70 percent. The Wolverines entered the third with a 4-1 lead, and their 5-on-5 Corsi dropped slightly to 60.87 percent. For the game, the Wolverines recorded a 5-on-5 Corsi of 71 percent.

Michigan vs. AIC, 11/15/14 W, 6-3

AIC scored first, followed by four Michigan goals in a row. The Yellow Jackets netted two in a row in the second to bring the score back to 4-3, and the Wolvines tacked on two tallies in the third. This means there were a few times when the score was close — up until the 12:39 mark of the first (when Michigan made it 3-1) and then again in the second when the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to 4-3. Michigan’s 5-on-5 Corsi close was 71.05 percent. The Wolverines finished the game with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 66.36 percent.

Michigan State vs. Boston College, 11/14/14 L, 3-2

The game was close at several points. The Eagles scored 39 seconds into the game and were ahead 2-0 at the 12:33 minute mark. But the Spartans cut the score to 2-1 before the period’s end, and that score remained until the Eagles went up 3-1. Over that period, Michigan State’s Corsi close was 43.75 percent. Michigan State’s first-period, 5-on-5 Corsi was 39.39 percent. For the game, Michigan State recorded a 5-on-5 Corsi of 39.33 percent.
