Big Ten: A Look Into Corsi, Week 10

Posted by: Jashvina Shah

Thanks to the winter break, not many Big Ten teams were in action this weekend. Michigan State defeated Clarkson, while both Wisconsin and Michigan lost.

The stats and context are listed below:

Michigan State vs. Clarkson

Period 2: 5v5: 41.67%, Total: 59.46%;
Period 3: 5v5: 37.5%, Total: 40%;
Total: 5v5: 50.62%, Total: 56.41%

Wisconsin vs. NTDP 12/12/14, L, 4-1

It was an exhibition game, but given the way Wisconsin’s season is going, I figured I should calculate it. The Badgers actually scored first and held a 1-0 lead through two periods, until the NTDP scored all four goals in the third. Wisconsin’s Corsi close (up until the NTDP went ahead 2-1 in the last frame) was 35.94 percent.

Michigan vs. Boston College 12/13/14

This game wasn’t close for long. I heard Michigan played well, but it took BC less than eight minutes into the game to take a 2-0 lead. Despite allowing three goals in the first, the Wolverines had a 5-on-5 Corsi of 56.41 percent. For the game, Michigan’s 5-on-5 Corsi was 59.09 percent. But, Michigan also spent almost the entire game behind. When you take score effects into consideration, the Corsi numbers may just have been high because Michigan was playing from behind.

Michigan State vs. Clarkson 12/14/14

In an odd twist, these two teams – which are defensive-minded and have trouble scoring – combined for 10 goals. The score was close until the Spartans, on a five-minute power play,  took a 5-3 lead in the second. Michigan State’s Corsi close was 56.36 percent. Michigan State’s Corsi dropped in the second, but at that point the Spartans were ahead by two goals.
