Big Ten: A Look Into Corsi, Week 15

Posted by: Jashvina Shah

Over the week, College Hockey News released in-depth metrics for each game. This allows for a better breakdown of who the shots are coming from. But I still calculated total Corsi the way I normally do – by going through the play-by-play sheets for the games so I can have numbers for each individual period as well as 5-on-5 and special teams.

After looking at the Corsi stats for this weekend, Wisconsin still has the worst in the league. Michigan is nearing the best, and I don’t think it’s a strategy to take more shots (like Penn State has) and just a bi-product of their high-powered offense. The Wolverines also convert more of their attempted shots than Penn State.

The Corsi stats are listed below:

Minnesota vs. Minnesota State 1/23/15, 1/23/15 L, 4-2

The Gophers struck first, but Minnesota State took a 2-1 lead in the second. Minnesota tied it, but it was all Minnesota State from there. The Mavericks took a 4-2 lead into the third, and didn’t relinquish it. The Gophers had a low first-period Corsi, but picked up their possession stats later in the game. Minnesota had a penalty shot (which I didn’t count in Corsi) when Stephon Williams knocked the net off in the third. The Gophers finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 50 percent. Bryce Gervais finished a Corsi For of eight, highest amongst all players.

Minnesota vs. Minnesota-Duluth 1/24/15, L, 2-1

This game was close until late in the third period, when Adam Krause scored his second to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1. The Gophers upped their Corsi in the third period (by a lot) but finished the game with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 49.45 percent.

Michigan State vs. Ohio State, 1/23/15, MSU 4, OSU 1

This game was close for the first two periods, until the Spartans pulled away with a three-goal lead in the third. Michigan State’s offense was bolstered by the return of Matt Berry, who missed several games on forced leave from the team. Corsi close (through the first two periods) was fairly even, with Ohio State earning the slight 51.69 percent advantage. Michigan State captain Michael Ferrantino finished with a Corsi For of 11.

Michigan State vs. Ohio State, 1/24/15, MSU 2, OSU 0

The Spartans finished with a Corsi close of 61.25. The game was close through the first two periods, as Michigan held a 1-0 lead. The Spartans finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 65.42 percent.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan 1/23/15 UW 4, UM 7

This game was quite a comeback. The Badgers had a 4-1 lead in the second period, but the Wolverines responded with six straight goals to defeat Wisconsin 7-4. Michigan finished with a Corsi close of 71.43 percent, meaning Wisconsin’s possession problems continued. Dylan Larkin had a Corsi For of 13, as his line continued to dominate.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan 1/24/15 UW  UM

The score pretty much sums up the game. Michigan has the most high-powered offense in the country, and there’s no way the Badgers could stop that. Michigan’s defense was slightly better, as they didn’t surrender four goals to the Badgers this night. In the first period, Michigan had a 5-on-5 Corsi of 89.26 percent – leaving Wisconsin’s at 10.71 percent. I was shocked too. The Wolverines finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 72.41 percent, while Wisconsin’s was 27.59 percent.

Penn State vs. Northern Michigan 1/23/15, W, 5-4

Well. Penn State scored first, and took a 1-0 lead in the second. The Wildcats responded with four second-period goals for the 4-1. Not to be outdone, the Nittany Lions roared back (pun very much intended) with four goals of their own to erase the three-goal deficit and take the win. Surprisingly, the Nittany Lions had a low Corsi in the first period, when they earned the first goal.

Penn State vs. Northern Michigan 1/24/15, T, 5-5

Like the previous night, Northern Michigan pulled ahead with a three-goal lead. The teams exchanged goals in the second, and Penn State scored the next three goals to tie the game in the third period. The Wildcats retook the lead in the third, but Dylan Richard knotted the score at five. Penn State finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 68.82 percent.
