Big Ten: A Look Into Corsi, Week 12

This week, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Minnesota combined for a 3-2-1 record. The Gophers and Badgers split their weekend, while Ohio State defeated and tied Mercyhurst.

Despite missing Hudson Fasching and Ryan Collins on Friday, Minnesota still recorded its highest 5-on-5 Corsi for the season. This marked the fourth and fifth time so far the Gophers passed the 60 percent mark for 5-on-5 Corsi.

The Badgers earned their second win of the season, snapping a four game losing streak. But Wisconsin’s Corsi numbers hovered around the 35 percent mark for both games, and the Badgers won Saturday largely because of Joel Rumpel’s play.

Ohio State scored six goals on Friday, while controlling 5-on-5 play. The second game between Mercyhurst and Ohio State was more even, and the Buckeyes recorded a 50 percent Corsi for 5-on-5 play.

Minnesota vs. Merrimack 1/2/14, L, 3-2

This game was close until the Warriors took a 3-2 lead late in the second. Minnesota, which took a 1-0 lead early, had a Corsi close of 55.77 percent. Trailing by one in the third, Minnesota’s Corsi unsurprisingly rose. The Gophers finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 61.11 percent, but Merrimack’s Rasmus Tirronen played extremely well.

Minnesota vs. RIT 1/3/14, W, 3-2 OT

Both teams exchanged goals for the entire game, with Minnesota holding a 2-1 lead into the third. RIT tied the game in the last frame, while Kyle Rau netted the win in overtime. I counted Corsi close as the first two periods, and Minnesota’s 5-on-5 Corsi close was 67,86 percent. The Gophers finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 65.66 percent. Down by one in the third, Michigan Tech dominated possession, leaving Wisconsin’s 5-on-5 Corsi at 24.07 percent for the frame.

Ohio State vs. Mercyhurst, 1/2/15, W, 6-3 

Ohio State took a 2-0 lead just over midway though the first period, and never relinquished the two-goal lead. Matt Johnson helped spark Ohio State’s offense with a hat trick. The Buckeyes finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 61.73 percent. 

Ohio State vs. Mercyhurst, 1/3/15, T, 2-2

The game was close until early in the second, when Mercyhurst took a 2-0 lead, and again nine minute later when the Buckeyes cut it to 2-1. Ohio State’s Corsi close was 47.50 percent.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan Tech, 1/2/15, L, 8-1

Michigan Tech had a 3-0 lead by the end of the first, and scored three more in the second. The Badgers had a 23.33 percent 5-on-5 Corsi in the first. The Badgers picked it up in the second with a 41.94 percent 5-on-5 Corsi. For the game, Wisconsin’s 5-on-5 Corsi was 36.59 percent.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan Tech, 1/3/15, W, 2-0

The first two periods of this game counted as close, and the Badgers had a Corsi close of  for 5-on-5 play. The Badgers took a 1-0 lead in the second, and scored an empty net goal late in the game. Joel Rumpel finished with 47 saves. For the second-straight night Wisconsin had a low Corsi, with one of 38.89 percent during 5-on-5 play. For the game, the Badgers recorded a 35.54 percent Corsi.
