Big Ten: A Look Into Corsi, Week 14
Posted by: Jashvina ShahBig Ten play resumed this weekend, giving us a chance to compare possession during in-conference play. Penn State and Michigan State tied on Friday night, but the Nittany Lions offense broke out on Saturday for the win. Michigan dominated Ohio State, while Minnesota dominated Wisconsin – yet still ended the weekend with a tie and win.
Despite Michigan scoring 10 goals in its win over Ohio State, the Buckeyes actually finished with a slightly higher Corsi. But the Wolverines did score a couple of goals on a five-minute major power play.
The Gophers dominated possession against Wisconsin on Friday, but allowed the Badgers to tie the game very late. And Wisconsin won in the shootout, earning the extra point in conference play and leaving Minnesota disappointed. That rivalry resumed its hatred on Saturday night, with a crazy scrum ensued in the closing minutes. There were a lot of penalties handed out.

Penn State vs. Michigan State, 1/16/15, PSU 2, MSU 2 OT
By Corsi standards, this game was close until the third period, when Michigan State entered the frame with a 2-1 lead. But the Nittany Lions tied the game and the teams skated to a 2-2 tie. Including the first two frames, the tail end of the third and overtime, Penn State finished with the higher Corsi close of 54.88 percent. Michigan State dominated possession in overtime, and earned the extra point with a shootout win. Penn State – as usual – finished with the higher 5-on-5 Corsi.
Penn State vs. Michigan State, 1/17/15, PSU 5, MSU 2
This game was actually close for some time. The Spartans conceded the first goal, but followed with two tallies to enter first intermission ahead 2-1. But then Penn State’s offense – and its top line – scored the next four goals over the next two periods to win 5-2. The score was still close until the third, when Penn State was ahead 3-2. For this period, Penn State recorded the higher 5-on-5 Corsi of 57.35 percent. Penn State also had the advantage in 5-on-5 possession with a 59.57 percent Corsi.
Michigan vs. Ohio State, 1/17/15, UM 10, OSU 6
The score does a good job of indicating this, but the game wasn’t close for long. The Wolverines held a 2-0 lead early in the first. The Buckeyes scored a shorthanded goal to cut the lead to 2-1, but Michigan tacked on two tallies on the five-minute major. The Buckeyes showed some life late couldn’t close the gap. Trailing at the start of the third, naturally Ohio State’s Corsi jumped up. The Buckeyes also finished with a slight possession advantage in 5-on-5 play, recording a 50.59 percent Corsi.
Minnesota vs. Wisconsin, 1/16/15, Minn 2, UW 2 OT
After watching this game, I can say Minnesota dominated Wisconsin. The Gophers scored in the first and held their 1-0 lead until the third, when Hudson Fasching made it 2-0. But the Badgers scored two goals in less than two minutes to tie the game and eventually win in the shootout. Minnesota finished with a Corsi close of 69.51 percent. Surprisingly, the Badgers had a third-period, 5-on-5 Corsi of 37.04 percent, and still scored twice to tie the game.
Minnesota vs. Wisconsin, 1/17/15, Minn 5, UW 2
This game got really interesting the third period, when there were six Gophers stuffed in the penalty box. Eddie Wittchow threw this hit on Leon Bristedt, and a crazy scrum ensued. But, back to Corsi. Figuring out the power play situations for the end of the third was difficult, but they were counted as power play chances and didn’t factor into 5-on-5 Corsi. Minnesota finished with a 5-on-5 Corsi of 59.72 percent.
